Tripoli, the ancient city
Tripoli is the second capital of the
Lebanese Republic. It is situated at approximately 80 km from
Beirut. Abu Ali river, welling out from Kadisha valley, crosses the
city and separates two hills: Abu Samra from the south and Kobbeh
El Nassr from the north.
Tripoli is characterized by the
cultivation of the citrus fruits. And the odor of the lemon flowers
that fills its gardens, gave to the city the name of “TARABOULOS EL
FAYHAA“, (Tripoli the fragrant city).
Tripoli is considered as the number one
city on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea to have such a
traditional heritage. It includes more than 160 historical
monuments: a citadel, mosques, schools, souks and others. These
ancient and valuable monuments were built by the fatemists, the
crusades, the ottomans and the mamlouks, like the Mansouri Mosque,
the biggest and most ancient mamelouk mosque in the region, in
addition to the Nasserite School in Souk Al Attareen (Spice sellers
market).

The ancient souks of the city take you
back in history: Souk Al Attareen, Souk Al Sagha (Gold market), Khan
Al Khayateen (Tailors khan), and Khan Al Saboun (Soap khan); the
latter provided ancient Europe with the soap made in Tripoli from
olive oil. In the old neighborhoods there are a lot of manual crafts
and industries like the copper handcrafts, the oriental clothing and
the furniture in addition to the tasty oriental meals and famous
Tripoli sweets, not forgetting the Tehina, and all kinds of Halawa
Tehiniah.
Tell Square is the main square in the
city where you find a five floors ottoman clock given as a present
to the city by the ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid. Near the clock there
is a public garden, and the ottoman Nawfal Cultural Center, today
known as Rashid Karameh Cultural Center, after being transformed
into a public library and a conference and exhibition hall. Around
Tell Square there are houses, commercial centers and old hotels
built according to the ottoman style.

We must not forget Rashid
Karameh International Fair, designed by the Brazilian architect
Oscar Nemayer. It is a wonderful architectural achievement spreading
over a surface of one million square meters which became after the
expansion of the city inside the borders of Tripoli. The city
includes also, several sport clubs, playgrounds, cinemas and several
local universities and hospitals spread all over the city. Moreover,
Tripoli port is considered as an important commercial point second
to Beirut port.
